ScooterGal Interview #1

Each issue, ScooterGal Confidential introduces you to one of your scootering sisters. Maybe you'll see one of them at your local rally or scooter event? Be sure to say you saw them on ScooterGal Confidential.

Lori B. is a member of the Dana Scully Scooter Club in California. She has three scooters and can answer any question about the band "The Cure."

SGC How long have you been scootering? When did you start riding motorcycles?

I've been scootering since July 97, so just over 5 years.  I started riding dirt bikes when I was 12my brother and I shared a Honda 80cc motorcycle.  My dad had been into riding since the 70s and even did some amateur racing.  Wed frequently go to Hollister Hills to ride on the weekends.    

SGC: How many & what type/year of scooters do you have?

1953 Vespa 125 (handlebar/fender light model)

1974 Vespa Primavera (my first scooter, recently restored)

1981 Vespa P200E (never really bonded with this one & will be selling it)

SGC: What is your favorite rally?

The most memorable rally of all times is Mexi Moto 98.  Amerivespa 99 was also excellent.  Plus I always enjoy the local yearly rallies (Kings Classic, Scooter Rage, Shindig, Moto Italia, Scootouring, Worshipping the Beast).       

SGC: Is there any dream scooter or curiosity scooter you would like?

I'd like my next scooter to be a Lambretta series III bike like a TV175 or LI150 Special.  Although I consider myself a Vespa gal, I admit to having Lambretta envy every once in a while.    

SGC: What is your favorite thing about scootering?

Basically riding and having fun are my favorite things about scootering.  I love the actual riding, especially in curvy mountain terrain.  Plus I enjoy the social aspects like hanging out, taking road trips, meeting interesting people, getting exposed to new things, etc.  I like doing things in an unconventional way, and thats what scootering is all about.

SGC: What is the most complicated scooter repair you have done yourself?

I am totally retarded when it comes to scooter repair, so I usually take my scooters to the shop or have a friend work on them if something goes wrong.  However, Ive become reasonably good at troubleshooting and coming up with quick fixes involving bungy cords and/or zip ties that have saved me from being stranded somewhere.  

SGC: How often do you ride?

I ride on the weekends and a couple days during the week.

SGC: Any specific place you want to travel via scooter?

Generally I prefer to truck my scooter to faraway destinations, but it would be cool to ride along the California coast.

SGC: If you could have any custom scooter (mural, paint job, accessories etc.) what would it be?

If I ever do a custom scooter it will have to be Cure related.  I would like murals of various album cover artwork, focusing on the more obscure promos or singles (I knowNERD alert).  And of course a subtle custom license plate to match.         

SGC: Give the specs on your fancy new primavera, ie. kits, mods, pipes etc...

Basically all the power and speed of a large bike in a small frame!

SGC: Any cool scooter stories?  Any law breaking scooter stories?

Too many to tell, but heres a couple

My first rally experience was Kings Classic 97, about a month after I bought my Primavera.  I was still getting used to riding in general, let alone with hundreds of bikes.  My first ride was the Saturday night ride and I was totally overwhelmed by fall the red-light running and crazy driving, plus we were going in a direction opposite of the final destination which confused me further.  I lost sight of my friends so I pulled over and figured Id just go directly to the club and meet people there, but I ended up getting there before the ride and was even more confused cos nobody was there yet.  So I headed out again, thinking maybe I got the wrong place.  Basically I was riding around alone (with flaky electrical) on the streets of SF for around 2 hours before finally meeting up with my worried friends.  Its funny what can happen when a person is not informed of the ways of rally riding. 

One night I was going to meet some friends at Fuel and was going down Santa Clara Street, which is notorious for cruising.  Traffic was backed up so I got impatient and cut to the right for a couple blocks before turning right.  As I was walking my scooter on the sidewalk to park outside of the club, I felt someone grabbing the rear end of the scooter.  I turned around and it was a cop, who was very angry that I did not pull over and thought I was running away from him.  I didnt see any flashing lights or hear any sirens so I was totally surprised.  He was a university cop with a point to prove.  He proceeded to ask me for license & registration etc., called in to check my record and lectured me about the maneuver, for which I pleaded ignorance and said I thought it was normal lane-splitting.  All of this happened right outside the club, which has big windows so everyone inside saw what was going on.  It looked like I was getting busted for doing something major, but he didnt even ticket me so it was just a long-winded warning.  When it was finally over and I went in, everyone was asking what happened and laughed when they found out it was such a minor thing.
